Steltronic server compared to a desktop PC
Server comparison to a desktop PC
Many people mistakenly believe that a server is not any different from a typical desktop computer; however this couldn’t be further from the truth.
While almost any computer that meets the minimum hardware requirements can run a server operating system, this alone does not make a desktop computer a true server. Even if the desktop computer had similar processor speeds, memory, and storage capacity compared to a server, it still is not a replacement for a real dedicated server. The technologies behind each of these systems are designed and engineered for many different purposes.
Desktop computer systems today typically run Windows XP, Windows 7, or Windows 8 as the operating system and other 3rd party desktop applications to facilitate desktop-oriented tasks. In contrast, a server will also manage all network resources, thus servers are often dedicated (meaning it performs no other task besides server tasks).
Because a server is engineered to manage, store, retrieve/send, and process data 24-hours a day, it has to be more reliable than a desktop computer and offers a variety of features and hardware not typically found in the average desktop computer.
That being said, Steltronic provides a 24 lane (or more) bowling center with a dedicated server with very special hardware and software to run the bowling center business in the most efficient way possible.
It is therefore recommended that a Steltronic server be left as-is, and that no other 3rd party software be installed onto the server. All of the software pre-loaded onto your server prior to its arrival at your bowling center has been approved for server use, and this will keep the server running at its best possible performance.
